Individual Volunteering Opportunities


Evening Care for Preschoolers: Help preschool children (1 to 4 years) with social, motor, and cognitive skills in a safe, positive environment where children can focus on learning and growing. Tasks will include assisting with story time, circle time, various activities aimed at increasing specific skills, supervising play yard time, and other tasks as directed by the teacher. Volunteer times are 6:30 to 8:30 Monday through Thursday only. The commitment is once a week for one month. Minimum age is 18.

Dinner Servers: Serving dinner includes helping to set up the serving line. This can be done once or multiple times. This is a good activity for a child and a parent but older volunteers will also enjoy this. Minimum age of child volunteering with parent is 12. To volunteer alone minimum age is 16. This is only available 4:30- 6:30PM Monday through Thursday and some Fridays.

Homework Enrichment Program: Help school aged children achieve academically and socially. You will be working under the guidance of the program’s teacher. The tasks will include assisting with homework, leading or supporting various group activities aimed at increasing specific skills, and supervising play yard time. This is an opportunity to make a significant difference in a child’s life. The commitment is once a week for three months. Minimum age is 18. Must be able to arrive by 6:15. This program operates Monday through Thursday 6:15 to 8:30 PM only.

Voyager Day Care Program: Assist the Voyager Day Care’s two teachers as they work with infants and preschoolers. Activities include helping with snack time and lunch, craft and art projects, story and circle time, various skill building exercises as well as supervising outside play. This is a once a week for one month commitment. Minimum age is 16. This program takes volunteers only Monday-Friday from 9:00am-noon and 3:00-5:00PM.

Kitchen Helper: Help our cook with a variety of tasks from unloading donated food from trucks, rotating and organizing food, meal preparation, cleaning, and other tasks assigned by the cook. This is a once a week for one month commitment. Minimum age is 16. This program takes volunteers only Monday-Friday from 9:00am-noon and 3pm-5pm.

Clothes Closet Aide: Help staff sort and organize donated clothing in the Clothes Closet so that residents can easily “shop” for just what each family member needs. Volunteers will also be helping to prepare rooms for new incoming families including making beds up with fresh donated bedding, leaving clean towels, toiletries and even some cute stuffed animals to welcome family members. This is a once a week for one month commitment. Minimum age is 16. This program takes volunteers Monday-Friday from 9:00am-noon only.

Workshop Facilitator: Facilitate an educational workshop for adult residents. Topics will fall under at least one of the following general headings: Relationships, Education, Financial, Legal, Health, Safety, Nutrition, Computer Skills, We utilize workshops in both English and Spanish. Groups can be gender specific, issue specific, or address the entire adult population. This can be one time, a series, or a single workshop presented at various times throughout the year. You must have an area of expertise appropriate to the needs of the residents. Workshops are scheduled Monday through Thursday 7:00-8:00 PM with occasional daytime scheduling.

Adult weekday volunteer on call list: On a periodic basis the San Jose Family Shelter has the need for daytime adult volunteers for short term projects or activities. Typically this would be for a few hours on one day but could conceivably be a full day or two. Here are some possibilities:

bullet Babysitting for a few hours
bullet Decorating for an event or holiday
bullet Representing the shelter at an event, volunteer faire, or other
bullet Doing administrative work like addressing envelopes, covering the front desk during a staff meeting, copying, filing, shredding
bullet Translating
bullet Organizing
